Climate Change

an extremely unpopular position on climate change

| | | | |

After trying to research this issue in order to explain it to others, I've found myself taking an extremely unpopular position: I'm not sure that the climate is particularly changing, I'm not sure that changes are being caused by humans, and if they are, I'm not sure that they would have the devastating consequences to the planet that are being predicted. This attitude makes me a great anomaly among the environmentally-conscious.

What I learned from 9/11

I'm not sure where people (I mean, in our culture, generally speaking) are at with this. I don't know to what extent the people of my culture are awakening to reality.

Climate Change... please don't butcher me...

| | |

Ok... please don't butcher me for this post, as I'm going to post a few ideas that are contrary to the "accepted" idea of global warming, and I'd like to point out that I am not sure about what effects humans have had or having on the enviornment, or whether global warming, global cooling, or a giant volcano is going to "end the world" (human world) as we know it. The following is an opinion based on loose facts and an a general opinion, which can be easily changed by facts.

As The World Burns

| | | |

But surely the single most important event of the month was the revelation that arctic sea ice is melting faster than even the most dire forecasts had predicted. This is significant because it shows the power of reinforcing feedback loops: as sunlight-reflecting ice melts, it leaves dark water in its place - which absorbs more heat, causing more ice to melt, and so on. This year's minimum extent of ice was about one million square miles (as of September 16); the previous record low was 1.5 million in 2005. The rate of melting this year was 10 times the recent annual average. This month the Northwest Passage was ice-free for the first time in untold millennia. At this rate, the north polar region could be ice-free in summer by 2015.

Green boondoggle?

I was watching Green: the New Red, White and Blue on the Discovery Channel last night, and it occurred to me that global warming has now become a political problem, and:

Political problems don't get solved.

The Inconvenient Truth

| |

This past weekend I checked out The Inconvenient Truth from our local library and watched it with my parents.  We all thought it was well done.  My dad even stayed awake, that doesn't happen to often.  The next day he recommended it to my sister and her husband to watch, too.  And that doesn't happen to often.

I learned a lot about global warming from this documentary that I didn't know before.  But I didn't like where they discussed some of the things we can do at the end.  They listed things like recycling, by a hybrid car if you can, go solar, etc. My mom just sat there and shook her head with a helpless look on here face (Atleast that is how I percieved it).  It just didn't explore the root of the problem enough. And I realize they really couldn't if they wanted to reach a large audience.  But what would've been handy is a Ish type documentary on how things came to be this way.  I know the book exists, but my family don't read much.  They're to busy working to pay their bills.
