Hi,

I'm Patrick (aka Rixbear)... like so many others here, I was profoundly affected by Quinn's books. So far, I've read Ishmael, The Story of B, My Ishmael, After Dachau, Beyond Civilization, and Tales of Adam. After getting acquainted with Quinn's message, I also read Gaviotas, The Tipping Point, Guns, Germs, and Steel, parts of Endgame, and most recently, The Continuum Concept; I'm currently working on The Unschooling Handbook.

places that have already been through "collapse"

this is from ran prieur's forum and it's really interesting... cuba went through it's peak oil period already inthe 90's and "bounced back" nicely. the link below will take you to the discussion which includes a couple of resources and video of this transition.

Into the Wild

I've just returned from a long visit of midwestern culture. While I was home, I saw
Into The Wild...... at the art house. Apparently the only place it was playing in INdianapolis.

I wondered who has seen this true story and what it made you feel?

brad lancaster stood in the middle of the desert and told his story to about 70 or 80 of us. he had a projector and a terrific sense of humor. he talked about the ecological history of Arizona and how cities in general are designed to get rid of water. he showed pictures of a river in arizona from early 1900's that once was always full, yet shallow, slow moving, and very very curvy and surrounded by a forest as far as the eye could see! amazing to think that such lush diverse eco-systems were part of that land not so long ago. now, that same river is as straight as a ruler and almost never running, but when it is the water rushes through and the forest, is no longer there.

World Food & Population Growth–a slide show from Russell Hopfenberg, Ph.D.

For an excellent tool to complement the Quinn-Thornhill DVD Food Production and Population Growth (and to pass on to others) check out the web slide show created by Dr. Hopfenberg. It's loaded with graphs, charts, and statistics–all presented in a way that's easily accessible–even for nonscientists. Go to slide show.

Cultural prison breaks

it was after reading tony's two story postings i thought this might be an appropiate addition. for myself identifying with certain stories and the characters within the landscape of these narratives is what has helped me move toward fulfillment of my own vision - though the details of our current story seem to be what is important right now. the article below came to me from a 75 year old woman mentoring me in Original Play and healing arts. Drawing of My Adventures in Seattle

This post has nothing to do with IshThink, I'm just posting this drawing for show-and-tell.

a taking circle with tim and sally

| | | |

this might be brief,

last night myself and sixty or more squeezed into a room not large enough for us all to watch WHAT A WAY TO GO: LIFE AT THE END OF EMPIRE.

there is a coherent stream of conscious narrative holding all the sound bites and blurbs together as it weaves it's way through four parts ... it felt long, exhausting, as the material is heavy, and an unfliching look in to the face of the impending collaspe is painful even if you're well aware of it's constituent characters and players eating away the foundation of empire.
the movie ended, the credits rolled and the silence washed over us like a hot, uncomfortable wind. followed by thundering applause...?! tim and sally then offered their time to talk in a circle with a talking stick. they first said, "this movie brings us into a space of emotion and feeling... just stay there and recall a feeling from the movie and what it brought up for you and turn to a nieghbor and tell them about it." so we did, the room buzzed for several minuets with people sharing anger, despair, fear, happiness, hope, estatic aniexity,.,.,.,.... then we passed the stick around and said our peace (piece).
