John Durant

Hey, erbody.

Did anyone catch John Durant on the Colbert Report? He was a very eloquent man. He was talking about paleo diet. He has a website (under construction) called hunter-gatherer.com.

I gotta say, I'm not a paleo eater (I did recently give up veganism after 7.5 years, but I haven't progressed passed ovo-lacto yet) but it was really nice to hear this man speaking about hunter-gatherers and humans being around for the last 500k-1 million years and how the 30-year-old hunter-gatherer is a myth because infant mortality from 1-2 years (which was prevalent) was included in the average and that there were plenty of healthy 80 year olds and talking about hunter-gatherers as if they were people just like us, the same species, just people and just, just... it was pretty awesome. Not only that, but Colbert was nearly dumbstruck. For real, he barely had anything negative to say to the guy. He just kind of sat there and you could see his brain going, "hmm, that makes sense". Good times.

Out of curiosity, how do you crazy paleos feel after eating that way for an extended period?

 Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt

paleo

Hey Matt --

Does this mean that for all these years that I have been swooning about this topic that you have simply ignored me cos it didn't fit into your system?  Yeah... its okay.  you're forgiven Wink

When I finally get myself eating paleo (it takes about a month for me to get solidly converted -- ie get the wheat crap outta my system)  IF I am eating sufficient calories, I feel energetic, strong, healthy... and I am free from cravings, and "irrational" hunger.  *Sometimes* when I have been on paleo, I have also restricted fruits as I was trying to lose weight.  In those cases, some times I would get weak in the knees when I worked out.  But I have always been wobbly-knee inclined and I believe it was my own fault, so.....

I gotta check out that link!

Carbs

Hey, Tony.

Those shoes were pimp Big Smile

Hey, Janene.

Here's what I don't get. I was a vegan for a long time and I think it's safe to say that I was (am) a sugar addict. There's so much carbohydrates in the vegan diet that it's pretty much innevitable. But with the paleo diet, if all I'm eating is meat and vegetables, where the hell do the carbohydrates I need for energy come from? Also, isn't there a huge problem with saturated fats and related heart disease with such a meaty von meatenstein style diet?

Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt

Questions

Hey --

Okay... first off, regardless of "The Paleo Diet" I'm not gonna talk about that.  My interest is in paleolithic style eating.  That being said, the first and foremost priority is VARIETY in your diet.  So you are NOT just eating meat and vegies.  What you are doing is elminating wheat and *preferably* the bulk of other grain products, most or all beans (I have NO priblem with green beans, sugar peas, fresh corn... in moderation) and, preferably dairy products(ie milk based products.)

All that being said... eat as many servings of fresh fruit a day as you want (unless you want to *lose* weight -- that would modify this), eat sweet potatoes, rutabaga, jerusalem artichoke, etc.  Also, you are increasing the amount of fat in your diet so you get a lot of energy from that as well.  This is not a "low carb" diet, except as a side effect of eliminating grains as a primary (or even major) food source...... and protien is also a good source of energy *up to a point* -- your body can only metabolize a certain percentage of protien each day... thus "rabbit starvation."

As to saturated fats... there's a new study that takes a lot of the heat of off saturated fats... the problem (I suspect) is all of the toxins and chemicals that saturated fats absorb and thus put into your body when you eat conventionally produced (not to mention industrially processed) foods. For heart health... EGGS.  I cannot say it enough.  When I eat this way consistently I eat three eggs almost every day... ater doing that for nine months a doc wanted to run a cholesterol test on me.  He said my results were the best he had ever seen!

Regardless of the exact makeup of your chosen diet (let your body lead the way!), if you are eating a large variety of *whole* plant and animal products, avoiding industrial products (whether vegan-happy fake cheese or chef boyardee) I honestly believe you are on your way to feeling a million times better......... and that is the best sign of good health.
