Ish-like books for kids

starfish's picture

Here are some kids books that I really like:

The Story of the Root Chidren by Sibylle Von Olfers

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

The Winnie the Pooh books by AA Milne (NOT the Disney version)

One book I know of that is specifically anti-Ish is Lentil by Robert McLoskey. It's about this small town kissing the ass of some rich guy.

The Green Man and Old Turtle

I recommend one of the versions of "The Green Man" and  "Old Turtle". Just of the top of my head.

Take Care.

i liked "abuela's weave" by

i liked "abuela's weave" by omar s. castaneda and enrique o. sanchez. a beautiful story about some village weavers competing against  commercially-produced weavings. also deals with issues of being labeled "different" because of a physical deformity, and how that does not inhibit our gifts.

another good one is "material world, a global family portrait" by peter menzel. this book compares families from all around the world by their lifestyle, their possessions, their hopes and dreams and fears.....great pics, and revealing insights into the sameness, and the differences in our lives. in a war-torn country, one fathers wish for his children is that "they live long enough to grow up".

although material world is an adult book, little children find the pictures fascinating. i would often just read parts of the captions and tell stories about the families, or let the little ones tell stories about the pics. every grown-up should read this, too.

this is a good idea....reading to your kids about what doesn't work, and opening discussion about why....

ok, so it has santa claus in

ok, so it has santa claus in it......but "a wish for wings that work" by berkely breathed has a theme of "give support, get support". about a penquin who wishes he could fly, and finds out that his gift is just as important......
