Hey all,

I found out about a self sustaining home called earthships. www.earthship.net

I did a PowerPoint presentation for my Environmental Science class on my dream home. I chose an earthship while everyone else (big surprise right?) chose taker style houses- with some environmentally friendly materials (flourescent lights, etc...)

Anyways, enjoy. i really advocate the earthship lifestyle....

freakin' AWESOME!

This architect is my hero! Only $150,000 to build one of these houses, that's dirt cheap! In Seattle, houses are around a million dollars, same with the Bay Area. My dad could sell his house near San Francisco and build 5-7 of these! It's amazing to me how much money we waste when we could do things so much better and for so much cheaper! I want one of these houses.

What did your classmates say when you shared your Earthship with them?

It was mostly a lot of coughing and silence. After I presented, the next person said 'Well, my homes a little more normal and realistic."

I did not say anything,I suppose I am used to this sorta response. Its not that I am passive, i just find it hard to change a mind witha simple speil of mine (which may not be clearly expressed..) I just laughed to myself....and hoped- someday they will understand..

Cheers

Words Betray

From the comment of your classmate, it would seem that you stepped outside of their boundries of what is possible.

Without knowing too much context, it might be good that you didn't challenge the statement.  Often times, those sorts of challenges just result in bad feelings as people try to defend their position come Hell or high water.  A certain amount of challenging is good to try and ask people to self examine their own paradigms, but a fight isn't often the way to do that.

I'm really happy you presented this here, i'm really impressed with the concept and execution of it.

Wow

This guy is doing something that I always wished I could see done, and it seems like he is doing it -very- well from my perspective.  Bringing together all these great techniques and technologies like cob building, recycled building materials, bio-management of waste water.

I think it also looks some what like technology making a mind change for people.  The simple act of living in the house and seeing what you can do is giving some sort of change of thought processes.

Very cool.

Way to be.

Don't worry if other people don't understand - eventually they will understand, and whether or not its too late is up to them.  You can only put it out for them and see if you get a nibble.

Luckily, our beliefs don't require them to believe as we do.

Be well,

Dominic

This is so cool! I went and looked around the website a little, and it turns out there's a three week "learn how to build an earthship" workshop in Jamaica. they're going to build two I think. it looks really cool. it'd be pretty awesome if a bunch of ishthink ppl signed up and did this together, or something similar.
