10,000 Ways

The name Ten Thousand Ways represents the infinite possibilities that exist for different ways that humans can live, and also the belief that no one right way exists.
The Ten Thousand Ways gathering, held yearly, aims to bring people from disparate backgrounds together through this simple idea; the gathering exists for those who believe that our species can live in many more ways than we live now. At Ten Thousand Ways, we can meet like-minded individuals, make new friends, share and trade ideas, and network.
While many of us have read the books of Daniel Quinn (Ishmael, Story of B, My Ishmael) or Derrick Jensen (A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, Endgame), or studied deep ecology or permaculture, attending Ten Thousand Ways requires none of this; just arrive with an open mind about the possible future of humanity.

Last year, we used an Open Space format for event planning (see www.openingspace.net for more information on the Open Space format). As our theme, we used Life after Civilization: Building the Web of the Future. We held a variety of energetic workshops, including classes on making stone tools and bow-drilling fire, a guide to animism, a SHIFT: Feral movement session, critiques of modern systems, and analyses of sustainable energies.
If you plan to attend, ready yourself for some camping! We strongly recommend that you bring the following items:
- A sleeping bag
- Some form of shelter, from a tent to a tarp
- A sturdy water bottle
- Washable eating gear, preferably a plate or bowl, plus a cup and utensils
- A swim suit and towel (for those who may wish to swim)
- A light source
- Toiletry kit
- Clothes for 5 days / 4 nights of camping, plus anything you might need for travel
- A musical instrument (we welcome any and all forms of music, especially drums)
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- A camp chair or lawn chair - great for comfort, essential for campfires!
While day visitors will always be welcome, please SIGN ONTO THE GOOGLE GROUP if you plan to camp with us. The group camping site is limited to 30 people.
<>As far as food, we group-plan food; ideally, we share most meals between attendees, on either a large or small scale, with the costs and work split between those attending. One can find several conventional sources of food in the Ashland area, including local food co-ops and farmer's markets. (We also hope to supplement this food with U-pick and local gathering/foraging as possible.) Please ensure that you bring at least $5 per person per meal, for 9 meals, as well as any ideas regarding what you would like to eat. Sharing recipes is highly encouraged! We will spend any remaining cash on purchasing firewood for cooking, and for our nightly campfire circles.
We are discussing how cooking and clean up are being shared on the Google Group.

Thanks, Bill!
I won't make it this year, but I forwarded this info to my Houston Ish group.

Have a great gathering, folks!

Coming up!
I'm looking forward to seeing whoever can make it out to 10KWays this year. If you have this weekend open, living California/Oregon/Washington and still want to come, let me know ASAP and we can find you a carpool ride. Good times ahead.
